About Xeljanz
Pfizer first put Xeljanz on the market in 2012, presenting it as a safe, effective drug for rheumatoid arthritis. It was soon approved to treat ulcerative colitis and other types of arthritis, such as psoriatic arthritis.
Unfortunately, Xeljanz was eventually found to increase the risk of blood clots among arthritis and ulcerative colitis patients. And while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a black box warning in 2019, the fact of the matter is that Pfizer should have warned patients of this risk when the drug first went on the market. This claim is at the center of Xeljanz lawsuits.
Another FDA warning came in 2021, this time about the link between Xeljanz and an increased risk of “serious heart-related events, such as heart attack or stroke, cancer, blood clots, and death.” Again, plaintiffs allege that Pfizer should have warned them of this risk long ago.
Dangerous Xeljanz Side Effects
Blood Clots
Blood clots in the pelvis, thighs, legs and lungs were the first of Xeljanz’s serious side effects to concern the FDA. In particular, Xeljanz created a heightened risk of pulmonary embolism (PE), blood clots in the lungs, and deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), a type of blood clot in the legs, for those taking the drug. Both PE and DVT may result in death.
Cancer
According to a Pfizer press release, the most common cancer linked to Xeljanz was lung cancer. Other cancers observed in clinical studies include but are not limited to:
- Breast cancer
- Colon cancer
- Melanoma
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Pancreatic cancer
- Prostate cancer
Heart Problems
As mentioned, Xeljanz has been found to increase the risk of a serious cardiovascular event, such as:
- Acute coronary syndrome
- Atrial fibrillation
- Cardiac arrest
- Cardiovascular death
- Congestive heart failure
- Coronary revascularization
- Heart failure
- Ischemic stroke
- Myocardial infarction
Myocardial infarction was the most frequently reported cardiovascular event reported after Xeljanz use.
