PFAS Water Contamination Lawsuits in New Hampshire
Understanding the Legal Basis for PFAS Lawsuits
One of the most concerning environmental issues affecting New Hampshire residents is the contamination of water supplies with harmful chemicals known as PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances). If you or your loved ones have been exposed to PFAS through contaminated water, you may be entitled to compensation.
You can check the results of public water supply tests across New Hampshire here, or nationwide contamination reports here to learn whether you may be in a confirmed contamination area.
What Are PFAS?
PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals used in various industries for their water- and heat-resistant properties. They can be found in non-stick cookware, firefighting foams, stain-resistant fabrics, and more. Unfortunately, PFAS are persistent in the environment and do not break down easily, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals.” Over time, they accumulate in our water, soil, and even our bodies.

New Hampshire Legislative Updates on PFAS
- In July 2024, HB 398 was signed into law, which adds a PFAS warning to the standard real estate conveyance warnings. This goes into effect on January 1, 2025.
- In August 2024, the Governor signed HB1649 into law. This includes a statute that requires polluters to provide property owners with safe drinking water either through payment for a municipal water connection or installation of a whole house treatment system (including payment of operation maintenance expenses), and to pay the property owner’s attorney fees and costs to obtain compliance. To this point, between the inequity in financial resources and the requirement to establish negligence, property owners have consumed contaminated water or relied on bottled water for years without relief.
These sites currently have a PFAS release large enough to trigger the HB1649 remedy:
- Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics in Merrimack, NH
- Textiles Coated International in Amherst, NH
