New Hampshire Mesothelioma Lawyer
Proven Trial Lawyers Serving Northern New England
Mesothelioma is a rare and life-threatening form of cancer most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos. Over the past several decades, millions of Americans have died from mesothelioma, often as a result of exposure to asbestos in the workplace, and roughly 3,000 new cases of the disease are reported in the U.S. each year.
As the links between mesothelioma and asbestos became clear, increased understanding of the hazardous carcinogen sparked the longest and most expensive mass tort in U.S. history. Today, asbestos litigation continues to provide victims and families devastated by mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseased with the justice and compensation they deserve. Given the disease’s latency period (up to 50 years after exposure), experts project more diagnoses and claims through the coming decade.

Mesothelioma & Asbestos Exposure
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer caused in most cases by exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring set of mineral fibers which can become lodged in the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma), or other organs, and cause inflammation that may result in tumors. Determining whether mesothelioma is connected to asbestos exposure is a critical aspect of any viable legal case, and requires an evaluation of the victim’s risk factors.
Because asbestos was used widely in various applications, until its use was restricted and finally banned by the EPA in 1989, there are various ways victims may have been exposed. These include:
Occupational Exposure – Exposure to asbestos in the workplace is one of the most significant risk factors for mesothelioma. The use of asbestos was common in many professions, particularly during the early to mid-20th century, and was used heavily for industrial and manufacturing purposes due to its structural integrity and resistance to fire. Some of the most common professions linked to increased exposure risks include:
- Asbestos mine workers
- Rail and shipyard workers
- Steelworkers
- Construction
- Textile workers
- Firefighters
- Manufacturing
Military Veterans – Veterans from all branches of the military commonly faced increased risks of asbestos exposure, particularly when its use was widespread from 1940 to 1980. However, veterans of the U.S. Navy typically faced the highest risks, as this branch of the armed forces used the most asbestos products.
Non-Occupational Exposure – Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases have been linked to other non-occupational factors. These commonly include:
- Secondary exposure among families of workers in high-risk occupations
- Naturally occurring asbestos, including exposure in communities near asbestos mines
- Tradesmen, workers, and homeowners who lived or worked in structures built before the 1980s
One of the most notable aspects of mesothelioma is its long latency period, which means that common symptoms of the disease – which can include shortness of breath, fluid buildup in the lungs, chest or abdomen pain, dry coughing, and respiratory complications, often do not show until 20 to 50 years after initial exposure. For this reason, many people are diagnosed with mesothelioma later in life.
Victims’ Rights: Mesothelioma & Asbestos Litigation
Mesothelioma is a life-changing diagnosis, and families often face profound suffering and setbacks as a result. However, victims and families can ease those burdens and secure the compensation they deserve by pursuing legal action. While many attorneys have been drawn to asbestos litigation over the years, not all can provide the courtroom experience and personalized focus that have helped our firm establish a reputation as bold and proven advocates.
At Shaheen & Gordon, P.A., we leverage the experience and resources of a team backed by over 30 attorneys to help victims and families explore their rights and options when it comes to asbestos litigation and mesothelioma claims.
