Transvaginal Mesh Injuries
Retain a New Hampshire & Maine Transvaginal Mesh Attorney Today
Transvaginal mesh injuries have been the subject of many recent lawsuits. Thousands of women received the mesh implants to treat conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Sadly, thousands of women began reporting serious side effects associated with their implants. The high failure rate of the implants caused many women to suffer serious injuries, and many had to undergo multiple corrective surgeries to repair the damage.
A New Hampshire personal injury lawyer from our firm can help you if you or someone you love was injured by a transvaginal mesh implant. Shaheen & Gordon, P.A. will fight for compensation to cover medical expenses, emotional trauma and additional damages.
Transvaginal Mesh Complications & Side Effects
This particular type of synthetic surgical mesh was originally approved for use in treating hernias. Since the surgical mesh had already received FDA approval, it only had to go through a limited review in order to be approved for use transvaginally. Women who received the mesh implants experienced side effects such as:
- Mesh erosion (also known as "exposure," "extrusion" or "protrusion")
- Infections
- Extreme pain (abdominal)
- Difficulty urinating
- Mesh perforation of surrounding organs (bowel, bladder and blood vessel)
- Recurrent prolapse
By 2008, the FDA had already received more than 1,000 reports of injuries involving nine different brands of surgical mesh. At this point, the FDA labeled this a serious, but "rare" occurrence, but in 2011 they updated their list of adverse mesh side effects stating that this is now an "area of continuing serious concern" and "not rare."
How are mesh implant injuries treated?
According to the FDA, many women who were injured by transvaginal mesh experienced "vaginal scarring and mesh erosion that led to a significant decrease in patient quality of life due to discomfort and pain, including dyspareunia (pain during intercourse)." Not only have many women experienced both temporary and permanent physical injuries, but severe emotional trauma / loss of enjoyment of life as well. The FDA recommends that patients immediately contact their doctors as soon as they experience adverse side effects from the mesh. Possible treatment procedures include additional surgeries, mesh removal, IV therapy, blood transfusions, drainage of any hematomas or abscesses. The safest way to treat conditions such as SUI and POP is with traditional, non-mesh repair.

Filing a Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit
Medical procedures to treat transvaginal mesh injuries can be costly, and the emotional hardship that injured women can experience is severe. Women who were injured by their transvaginal mesh implants have the right to take legal action and file a lawsuit against the mesh manufacturers. Some of the most well-known mesh manufacturers are:
- C.R. Bard
- Ethicon (a Johnson & Johnson company)
- American Medical Systems (AMS)
- Boston Scientific
Some transvaginal mesh complications may be in part caused by improper use of medical tools while placing the mesh in patients. Many transvaginal lawsuits have been grouped into what is known as multidistrict litigation (MDL). These lawsuits involve multiple women as plaintiffs against various mesh manufacturers in federal court. Shaheen & Gordon, P.A. personal injury lawyers will fight for victims of transvaginal mesh implants.
