Lawsuits for Depo-Provera’s Link to Meningioma
Pfizer, the manufacturer of Depo-Provera, the “birth control shot,” is facing legal action from people who used the injectable contraceptive and were later diagnosed with meningioma. Depo-Provera Linked to Meningioma
Depo-Provera uses medroxyprogesterone acetate, a type of synthetic progestin hormone, to interrupt ovulation and thicken cervical mucus, which both significantly reduces the chance of pregnancy. The birth control shot is injected once every three months. However, new medical research suggests that it is dangerous when used long term.
The use of progestin hormones has been linked to an increased risk of meningioma, especially intracranial meningioma. A study published in the British Medical Journal looked at the extensive medical records of more than 100,000 women who used Depo-Provera for at least one year. The researchers found that using the injectable birth control drug could increase the risk of meningioma by five times.
Intracranial meningioma is a dangerous type of brain tumor that can cause:
- Loss of hearing, vision, and sense of smell
- Migraines
- Seizures
- Confusion
- Memory loss
- Arm and leg weakness
- Depression
- Anxiety
To remove meningioma, brain surgery or spinal surgery is usually required, depending on the tumor’s location. All surgical operations involving the brain or spinal cord are risky, so in this way, Depo-Provera use might have put countless women at risk of not just meningioma but also the complications associated with intense surgical procedures.
