This groundbreaking legislation removes the previously mandatory requirement for customers to provide proof of lawful presence to acquire a standard driver’s license.

What is the Process for Immigrants to Obtain their Massachusetts Driver’s License?
Here are the steps for immigrants seeking to obtain a Massachusetts driver’s license from the RMV (Registry of Motor Vehicles) under this new law:
- Apply for Your Learner’s Permit and Pay Fees: This requires scheduling an appointment with the RMV and taking the learner's permit exam. You'll want to study and prepare all your documents for your application in advance. You can find resources, including a practice exam, here. You can pay all fees in advance online:
- Learner’s permit fee is $30
- Road test fee is $35
- License fee is $50
- Practice Driving and Schedule Your Road Test: Those under 18 must have a permit for six months and complete additional driver’s education before scheduling their road test. Those over 18 may schedule their road test immediately.
- Pass Your Road Test: Once you pass your test (and have paid the license fee) you’ll receive a temporary license, and your official one will be sent to your mailing address on file. If you fail your test, you can try again after two weeks. However, you are not allowed to attempt more than six times a year.
