After being hit with thousands of lawsuits accusing Johnson & Johnson of knowingly selling contaminated talc to consumers, the company recently announced it will no longer be selling talc-based baby powder in North America. However, Johnson & Johnson will still be selling talc-based baby powder in other countries around the world.
While Johnson & Johnson has built a wholesome reputation, thousands of lawsuits filed over the last few decades by patients who say their talc-based powder is contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen linked to ovarian cancer, have tarnished their image.
Although Johnson & Johnson has pulled the product in North America, the company maintains that “faulty testing, shoddy science, and ill-equipped researchers” are the reasons its baby powder was contaminated with asbestos. However, internal documents obtained during litigation show that Johnson & Johnson was aware that their talc-based powder possibly contained trace amounts of asbestos. Despite discussing the issue internally, Johnson & Johnson failed to warn consumers of potential health risks.
Now, thousands of women who developed ovarian cancer have sued Johnson & Johnson, as well as a smaller group of women who developed mesothelioma after using the product for years. Johnson & Johnson has been slapped with more than 19,400 lawsuits related to its talc body powders. The results of these lawsuits have been mixed. While one case resulted in a $4.7 billion award to 22 women, Johnson & Johnson has secured favorable outcomes in others and is appealing most of the cases it lost.
