A man from Limington suffered a serious injury after his motorcycle was struck by a car. The accident occurred in Standish on August 20, 2020.
According to Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the motorcyclist’s leg was amputated when the car hit his bike at the intersection of Route 35 and White’s Bridge Road. Police identified the injured man as John Huston, age 51.
Police say that Huston was riding his Harley Davidson on Route 35 and hit a car making a left turn onto White’s Bridge Road. Huston’s motorcycle was coming around the right side of a tractor-trailer after the light turned green when he collided with the other vehicle.
Police identified the driver of the car as 78-year-old William English of Windham. While there was a passenger in the vehicle, they did not suffer injuries in the crash. Huston was transported to Maine Medical Center to receive treatment for his amputated leg.
The Windham Police Department will reconstruct the accident, while the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office will lead the investigation.
A Motorcycle Accident Can Permanently Change Your Life
This is a catastrophic injury that will change this motorcyclist’s life forever, but thankfully, he survived this horrific incident. The simple truth is that motorcycles are incredibly dangerous vehicles. They share the road with cars and trucks that dwarf them in size. Plus, motorcyclists are physically exposed in a way that a person driving a car is not. The NHTSA reported that in 2017, a motorcyclist was 27 times more likely to die in a traffic crash than a person in a passenger car.
In cases involving a motorcycle, like this one, the injuries are all too often life-changing. Most people involved in motorcycle crashes don’t suffer only soft tissue injuries like you routinely see in automobile crashes. Having an experienced attorney who understands the unique medical issues you face, and who is able to effectively convey how this will impact your day-to-day life is crucial if you want to recover the compensation you need and justice you deserve.
