A recent accident on Exit 1 off of Interstate 93 resulted in a man losing his right leg. According to Salem Fire Battalion Chief Randall Young, a guardrail severed the man’s leg during the wreck.
Chief Young said, “The guardrail went through the passenger compartment of the vehicle.”
On April 25th, fire crews responded to reports of an accident on I-93. Young said two people were inside the vehicle involved in the accident.
Young said the rescue crews “definitely acted fast” when they tied two tourniquets on the passenger’s right leg to prevent further loss of blood. The passenger was transported by helicopter to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston to receive treatment for his severe injuries.
Medflight nurses updated the department and told them they were pleased with how quickly paramedics were able to apply tourniquets to the accident victim.
While the tourniquets likely made a huge difference in the man’s recovery, Young said they “are a new thing that we just started carrying in the last four or five years.”
According to Young, no other vehicles were involved in the crash, but the cause is still unknown.
