The New Hampshire Lottery will not appeal a decision in the Jane Doe v. New Hampshire Lottery Commission case, which allows for a $559.7 million New Hampshire Powerball winner to maintain her anonymity.
Attorney Steven Gordon, who represented the winner with Attorney William Shaheen, was pleased with the outcome:
“We appreciate the Lottery Commission’s kind words and good wishes as well as its decision not to appeal the court’s decision,” he said. “Ms. Doe remains to committed to quietly perform her good works and appreciates the support she has received in her efforts to maintain her privacy.”
The court had allowed Jane Doe to claim her prize through the Good Karma Family 2018 Nominee Trust facilitated through the law firm with Mr. Shaheen serving as trustee while awaiting the ruling. The trust recently made donations totaling nearly $250,000 to Girls Inc. and three chapters of End 68 Hours of Hunger.
The New Hampshire Lottery issued the following statement:
“We respect the Court's decision and are satisfied to have a resolution. We are pleased that our winner has claimed her prize money and that she has already shared a substantial amount of her winnings with New Hampshire nonprofit organizations-and has indicated plans for future donations. It is gratifying and humbling to see her commitment to the Granite State. We wish her and her family all the best.
“We never want to be in an adversarial position with our players, but we take our obligation to uphold the laws set forth by the New Hampshire Legislature seriously. Rather than appealing this ruling, we believe this matter should be taken up by the Legislature if it believes changes are in order.”
This winner marks the 11th Powerball jackpot winner in New Hampshire history.
